279. Can we have other names please?

February 16, 2013

India needs to move away from naming public institutions, roads, infrastructure and other things created from tax payers money after dead or living individuals. There are national awards to honour them in their lifetime or posthumously.  There can be exceptions to naming any one thing after a Former President or Prime Minister but naming everything after 3-4 people is a bit too much.

The days of absolute power are long gone. With social media everyone has a voice and everyone has a right to decide the naming procedure. Let’s find a solution that makes it transparent and easy to name the unnamed.

We can name our airports and bridges after rivers, flowers or just after the place it is situated in. New Delhi International Airport sounds better than Indira Gandhi International Airport. Don’t you think so? I do.
